Want to take your self-care to the next level? Why not try a castor oil pack?

Castor oils packs are warm and relaxing, but they offer so much more than a moment of rest. This simple routine offers gentle restoration to the liver, improves blood circulation, and aids in detoxification.

Let’s discover the healing wonders of castor oil packs and learn how you can do your own at home after your next colonic.

What is a Castor Oil Pack?

A castor oil pack is like a specialized warm compress for the Liver. You may be familiar with castor oil (made from pressed castor beans) as an oral supplement to help with constipation. In this instance, however, we soak sheets in the oil and apply topically over the belly to encourage better organ function.

What are the benefits of Castor Oil Packs?

Castor oil packs can be used for a range of reasons, from regulating digestion to enhancing fertility to calming skin conditions. They can even be used as a simple self-care and relaxation ritual to improve overall health. Here are the main benefits of castor oil packs:

  • Castor oil packs are moisturizing and anti-inflammatory, helping to reduce skin dryness, redness, puffiness, and allergic reactions.

  • Castor oil packs may help relieve pain and discomfort in the joints.

  • Castor oil packs may improve movement in the bowels and relieve constipation.

  • Castor oil packs may help the liver in its detoxification process and improve gallbladder function.

  • Castor oil packs may be used to help reduce the inflammation uterine fibroids and menstrual pain or enhance fertility.

How to Create Your Own Castor Oil Pack

Castor oil packs are simple to make and use.

You’ll need:

  • Castor oil

  • A large piece of cloth (unbleached cotton or flannel)

  • Scissors

  • A medium tub or bowl

  • Tongs

  • Protective plastic sheet (such as a plastic wrap or plastic bag)

  • Hot water bottle or heating pad

Make Your Castor Oil Pack

  1. Cut your cloth into 12-inch by 10-inch sheets. Aim to have at least 3-4 sheets.

  2. Pour enough castor oil into the container to fully soak each cloth sheet.

  3. One by one, soak each sheet in the castor oil, using the tongs to pick up the cloth in the container.

  4. Lay the soaked cloth flat on the plastic sheet.

  5. Soak the other two or more pieces of cloth in the same way.

  6. Add the oil-soaked cloths flat on top of the first one.

  7. Once you’ve soaked and layered each cloth, you’ve made a castor oil pack.

Enjoy the Castor Oil Pack

  1. Once you’ve created your “pack.” Prepare your hot water bottle or heating pad (if using) and find a quiet place to lay down. Lie on top of a large towel or sheet to prevent any stains from the oil.

  2. Carefully place your castor oil pack on the area you’d like to treat.

    • Place over the liver to enhance detoxification.

    • Place over the lower belly to soothe the colon after a colonic. You can also place the pack here to improve the health of the reproductive organs or enhance fertility.

    • Place over your mid-abdomen to enhance overall digestion.

  3. Cover the pack with your protective plastic sheet.

  4. Lay a hot water bottle or heating pad over the plastic for a gentle, relaxing warming effect. This added warmth increases circulation.

  5. Rest in place for 45 minutes to an hour. This is a great time to enjoy a guided meditation or simply enjoy the peace of the moment.

  6. When you are done with your pack, remove it and wipe any excess oil off your body with a warm damp towel.

  7. Return the cloth to the soaking container, cover, and refrigerate until next time.
